When centenarian pro-life trailblazer Haddy Burrows dies in her sleep, the spirit of the retired Black founder of maternity homes and Pregnancy Resource Clinics in Brooklyn arrives in heaven, anxious to meet Jesus and the spirits of the two children she had never known. Jesus tells Haddy to first explain the bad decisions of her life, and then her later repentance.

Haddy meets her children's spirits, who with no earthly memories of their past or of their mother, are eager to learn of her life in the "other world." Thus begins Haddy's flashbacks to key events in her troubled life, including: a traumatic childhood, a botched teenage abortion, abandonment by her lovers, a harrowing miscarriage, losing her professional violin career, and conflicts with Planned Parenthood. Yet she becomes a Christian late in life.

Her children discover their earthly lives were lost to Haddy's abortion and related miscarriage, while Haddy finally learns from the spirit of her one-time White fiancé the explosive truth around his abandonment of her 62 years earlier. Severely distraught emotions soon yield to forgiveness and the "dance of the innocent," with her long-lost children worshipping Jesus in song and dance.
